Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has responded to criticism from Roy Keane following his performance in the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City. Keane, analysing the match for Sky Sports, accused Shaw of 'throwing the towel in' during City's opening goal, where Jeremy Doku bypassed the left-back to set up Phil Foden.
Keane said: 'Shaw just gives up. It's a nice bit of skill, but Shaw's an England international player. He's got hundreds of games under his belt, he doesn't even get his body position right. It's like he has thrown the towel in.' The United legend also claimed Shaw has been 'getting away with murder for years', citing his injury record and lack of fitness.
Manager Ruben Amorim acknowledged the team's poor performance, stating: 'The performance was not good. In the important moments, they were better than us. I understand the frustration and I take the critics.' Since Amorim's appointment in November, United have collected the fewest points of any ever-present Premier League side.
Shaw's representative later dismissed Keane's comments, emphasising the player's commitment and professionalism. The defender is expected to retain his place for United's upcoming fixtures despite the setback.
