Luke Murray Appointed Head Basketball Coach at Boston College
Luke Murray, the second son of Oscar-nominated actor Bill Murray, has been named the head coach of the Boston College men's basketball team. This appointment follows a highly successful five-season tenure as the assistant men's basketball coach at the University of Connecticut.
A New Era for Boston College Basketball
Murray, 40, becomes the 14th head coach in the history of the Boston College program. He takes over from Earl Grant, who was dismissed earlier this month after a five-year period that yielded only one winning season. The university's director of athletics, Blake James, announced the appointment in a statement on Thursday, heralding it as a turning point for the team.
"In Luke Murray, we have found a leader who does not just understand the modern landscape of college basketball — he has helped define it," James declared. He praised Murray's "sophisticated offensive vision" and "relentless pursuit of excellence," stating these qualities make him "the perfect fit to lead our student-athletes." James concluded by expressing enthusiasm about welcoming Murray, his wife Kara, and their family to the Boston College community.
Impressive Coaching Pedigree and Achievements
During his time at UConn, Murray played a crucial role in the men's basketball team's achievements, which included five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and back-to-back national championships in 2023 and 2024. His coaching career spans over a decade, with previous assistant coaching positions at several prestigious institutions.
Prior to his role at UConn, Murray served as an assistant coach at the University of Louisville, Xavier University, the University of Rhode Island, Towson University, and Wagner College. This extensive experience has equipped him with a deep understanding of collegiate basketball dynamics and team management.
Murray's Personal Background and Family
Luke Murray is the son of Bill Murray and his first wife, Margaret Kelly. He is one of six sons of the renowned actor. Bill Murray's family includes his eldest son, Homer, 43, from his first marriage, and four sons—Caleb, 33, Jackson, 30, Cooper, 29, and Lincoln, 20—from his second marriage to Jennifer Butler, which ended in divorce in 2008 after 11 years.
In 2015, Luke Murray married Kara Cassidy, and the couple have three children together. Despite playing basketball in high school, Murray realized he was not suited for Division I college play. Instead, he turned to coaching, a passion he developed early, reportedly scouting players as young as 14. Reflecting on this, Murray once noted that his father initially found it a "strange hobby" but has since become very proud of his coaching accomplishments.
Looking Forward with the Eagles
In his statement, Murray expressed deep honor and gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Boston College Men's Basketball program. "BC is a university with a prestigious academic reputation and a storied basketball tradition," he said. "Boston College alumni and fans will find our program defined by a standard of excellence, and our team will play an unselfish, tough, and highly competitive brand of basketball. I am excited to get to work to build this proud program. Go Eagles!"
This appointment marks a significant step in Murray's coaching career, positioning him to bring his strategic insights and winning mentality to Boston College, with hopes of revitalizing the team's performance and legacy in collegiate basketball.
