Logan puts Shearer on spot over Guimaraes goal

Gabby Logan left Alan Shearer in an awkward spot as she closed Saturday's Match of the Day programme. The BBC host asked the Newcastle legend about ex-Magpies captain Bruno Guimaraes' latest goal for Arsenal.

Guimaraes completed a flowing team move in the 70th minute to secure Arsenal's comeback victory over Leeds United, keeping them in touch with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. The strike was his second for Arsenal, arriving just seven minutes after he came off the bench.

Logan's teasing question

Logan, daughter of Wales icon Terry Yorath, turned to her fellow pundits and said: "For the second season in a row, Bruno Guimaraes scores a big goal against Leeds United. You must be thrilled for him, Alan?"

While fellow pundit Danny Murphy laughed at the cheeky jibe, Shearer appeared unmoved, offering virtually no response as he said through gritted teeth: "Yeah." He did manage a grin for the camera as the closing titles began, suggesting he appreciated the humour in Logan's comment.

Reminder of what Newcastle are missing

Logan's remark touched on a sensitive subject for Shearer following Guimaraes' £75million move to north London. The Brazilian had been a popular figure at St James' Park, having formed an intensely passionate bond with supporters since his move from Lyon in 2022.

As Logan pointed out, it was the second successive season in which Guimaraes had made a telling contribution against Leeds. The Brazil international was still wearing the armband at Newcastle when he scored and assisted in a nail-biting 4-3 win last term.

Shearer's disappointment

Shearer became the first Newcastle skipper to secure silverware in 70 years following their Carabao Cup triumph in 2025. Speaking about Guimaraes' summer departure, he told Betfair at the time: "Yeah, I'm disappointed because I've seen him produce magical moments. I've seen how brilliant he is, I've seen how he can make a difference to the team."

"I've seen him kiss the badge. I've seen him react to the crowd; I've seen him be made captain. And I've heard him say how much he loves it and he loves the football club. So, from that point of view, yeah, I'm really disappointed."
