Liverpool have been advised to finalise a new contract for Dominik Szoboszlai after his Hungary manager claimed the midfielder dreams of playing for Real Madrid. The 24-year-old has been a standout performer for the Reds this season, scoring a brilliant goal in the 3-0 FA Cup win over Brighton on Saturday to reach double figures for the campaign.
Szoboszlai, who joined Liverpool for £60 million in 2023, is entering the final two years of his current deal. Talks have opened over an extension, with the player reportedly keen to stay at Anfield. However, Hungary boss Marco Rossi was quoted in Marca saying Szoboszlai's dream is to play for Real Madrid, sparking concerns among fans.
Former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given urged Liverpool to act swiftly. “He’s been the standout player for Liverpool all season,” Given told Match Of The Day. “I think they’ve dipped as a team, but this guy feels like he’s gone up a level. He is a special talent.” Given added: “If I was Liverpool, I’d try to tie him down.”
Szoboszlai's current tally of 10 goals is just two shy of his career-best 12, set at RB Leipzig in 2019/20. With his form attracting attention from Europe's elite, Liverpool face pressure to secure his long-term future.
