Liverpool will discover their opponents for the Champions League league phase today, with the draw set to take place later this week. The Reds, managed by Andoni Iraola, are aiming to improve on last season's campaign under Arne Slot, which ended with a quarter-final exit to eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Liverpool in Pot 1 for the draw
Liverpool have been placed in Pot 1, with their current coefficient ranking them eighth in UEFA's European club standings. The ceremony will produce eight opponents for every team, two from each pot.
No team can face a club from their own country in the league phase, ruling out Arsenal, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Manchester City. Additionally, sides can play a maximum of two teams from any single association.
Potential opponents and key matchups
Liverpool's possible opponents from Pot 1 are Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. A draw against Inter would reunite Liverpool with Curtis Jones, who left Merseyside to join the Nerazzurri this summer.
Pot 2 opponents could include Borussia Dortmund, Roma, Sporting CP, Porto, Club Brugge, Real Betis and PSV Eindhoven. Pot 3 features Feyenoord, Lille, Bodo/Glimt, Napoli, RB Leipzig, Villarreal, Galatasaray, Shakhtar Donetsk — who will play their European matches at Stamford Bridge this season — and Fenerbahce.
The teams in Pot 4 are Slavia Prague, Slovan Bratislava, Stuttgart, AEK Athens, LASK, Como, Lens, Viking and Sabah.
Dream and nightmare draws
A dream scenario for Liverpool would see them draw Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Sporting CP, PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord, Lille, Slavia Prague and LASK.
A nightmare scenario would pit them against Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Real Betis, Napoli, Fenerbahce, Stuttgart and Sabah.
