Liverpool's Alisson Becker Injury Update: Doubtful for Tottenham Clash
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has delivered a crucial injury update regarding goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who remains doubtful for the upcoming Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend. The Brazil international missed Liverpool's Champions League last 16 first leg match against Galatasaray in Istanbul, where the Reds suffered a 1-0 defeat.
Alisson's Minor Muscle Issue and Recovery Timeline
Slot explained that Alisson experienced a minor muscle problem during a passing drill, which forced him to sit out the European encounter. "He felt something when he passed the ball in one of his muscles but after we checked it, it was minor," Slot stated. "So it didn't take long, but games follow up so fast he had to miss Galatasaray, but hopefully he is ready to play Sunday. If not then definitely Galatasaray on Wednesday."
In Alisson's absence, Giorgi Mamardashvili stepped in as goalkeeper for the Champions League match, but Liverpool now face a deficit ahead of the second leg at Anfield next week. The team's focus shifts to the domestic league, where they aim to secure vital points against a Tottenham side battling relegation threats.
Additional Squad Updates: Chiesa and Isak
Slot also provided positive news on other injured players. Federico Chiesa is expected to be available for the Tottenham match after recovering sufficiently to rejoin training. "Chiesa, I expect he feels better; he is able to train with us today," Slot confirmed, offering a boost to Liverpool's attacking options.
However, striker Alexander Isak continues his rehabilitation process and is not yet ready for first-team action. The Sweden international is working with the medical team and hopes to return in the coming weeks. "[Isak] is with the rehab team still not with the team yet," Slot added, indicating a cautious approach to his recovery.
Slot's Tactical Outlook for Tottenham Match
Despite Tottenham's recent struggles, including a heavy midweek defeat to Atletico Madrid, Slot anticipates a challenging and different tactical setup from the opposition. He emphasized the need to analyze previous encounters and managerial styles, noting that Ange Postecoglou's approach differs from typical Premier League strategies.
"You have to look at how those other games went, playing style, managers," Slot remarked. "Ange was there last two times, known for different style than we mainly see in the Premier League now. So yeah, games are more open, as PSG v Chelsea was, two teams want to attack and press and that is not so common anymore that two teams want that style against each other. I expect a different Spurs setup than a year ago."
This insight suggests Liverpool are preparing for an aggressive and pressing game from Tottenham, which could lead to an open and entertaining match. Slot's comments highlight the tactical nuances that will shape this crucial Premier League encounter, as both teams seek to achieve their respective season objectives.
