Liverpool will be without first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker for Tuesday's Champions League last-16 first leg against Galatasaray after he sustained an injury in training. The Brazilian has been a key figure for Arne Slot's side this season, making 32 appearances in all competitions.
The club has confirmed a 21-man travelling squad for the trip to Istanbul, with Alisson omitted. Giorgi Mamardashvili, who joined from Valencia in a £25m deal last summer, will start, while Freddie Woodman is promoted from third choice to the bench. The full squad is: Gomez, Van Dijk, Konate, Kerkez, Wirtz, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Salah, Jones, Gakpo, Ekitike, Mamardashvili, Robertson, Woodman, Frimpong, Gravenberch, Nyoni, Nallo, Morrison, Ngumoha and Misciur.
It is understood that Alisson took part in Monday's training session but felt discomfort at the end, and will therefore not be risked. Federico Chiesa is also absent from the travelling party after missing Monday's session. The Italian forward was an unused substitute in the FA Cup win over Wolves on Friday.
Mamardashvili has started nine games for Liverpool this season, seven of them when Alisson was unavailable through injury. Speaking recently about his role, he said: "It is never easy because there is just one goal. If I don't play, I don't mind. I have to work hard every day and that's it. My time will come for sure." He added: "My ex goalkeeper coach, Jose Manuel Ochotorena when I was in Valencia, told me I have to find balance between ambition and patience."
Liverpool qualified directly for the last 16 after finishing in the top eight of the league phase. Galatasaray progressed by beating Juventus 7-5 on aggregate and defeated Liverpool 1-0 in the corresponding fixture in September.
