Liverpool cannot afford to start the new season with their current squad after a disappointing campaign under Arne Slot. The appointment of Andoni Iraola as head coach has brought excitement, but the squad has glaring gaps that need addressing before the Premier League opener against Newcastle on August 23.
Key departures and arrivals
The Reds lost three key players this summer without receiving any transfer fees. Andrew Robertson and Mohamed Salah left as ageing legends seeking new challenges, while Ibrahima Konate joined Real Madrid as a free agent, following Trent Alexander-Arnold's similar move a year earlier. Two new additions have been made: central defender Jeremy Jacquet, signed in January, and left-winger Victor Munoz for £34.5 million. However, at least two more signings are required to shape the squad for a successful season.
Priority: a marquee winger
Liverpool's top priority is a marquee winger. Several names have been linked, but Bradley Barcola remains the primary target. The France international's refusal to sign a new deal with Paris Saint-Germain boosted Liverpool's pursuit. However, PSG's £140 million valuation is a hurdle, as Liverpool are unwilling to meet that figure. Talks are reportedly ongoing to find a compromise. If a deal cannot be reached, Chelsea's Pedro Neto is a suitable alternative, costing less and offering Premier League experience.
Defensive reinforcement needed
Even before Konate's exit, Liverpool were short at the back due to Joe Gomez's recurring injuries and Giovanni Leoni's long-term ACL recovery. Gomez limped off in a pre-season friendly against Sunderland, and new arrival Jacquet was left out as a precaution. Iraola acknowledged the problem in a press conference, mentioning right-back Conor Bradley's recovery from a serious injury and the need for a solution at centre-back and right-back. A defender capable of playing both positions is needed.
James Hill as the answer
James Hill, who thrived under Iraola at Bournemouth last season, fits the bill. In 29 league appearances, he was one of the Cherries' most dependable defenders. While primarily a centre-back, he made three appearances at right-back. His stats include 11.16 defensive contributions per 90, 65.5% aerial duel success, and 63.8% overall duel success. He also created 0.56 chances per 90, showing progressive ball use. Hill would add depth and fill a homegrown spot in Liverpool's squads.
With Barcola and Hill brought in, Liverpool could have a near-bulletproof squad capable of challenging for silverware and striking fear in their rivals.
