Liverpool Legends Back Jarrod Bowen for Mohamed Salah Succession
Liverpool have received strong recommendations from two club icons to pursue West Ham United forward Jarrod Bowen as a replacement for the departing Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian winger shocked fans last month by announcing his exit at the season's end after a highly successful tenure at Anfield.
Finding a suitable successor to Salah, who has been instrumental in Liverpool's recent triumphs, presents a significant challenge. However, former Liverpool striker John Aldridge, who netted 64 goals in 104 appearances for the Reds, believes Bowen possesses the qualities needed to step into Salah's shoes.
Why Jarrod Bowen Fits the Bill
Aldridge, speaking to Boyle Sports, highlighted Bowen's attributes and potential fit at Liverpool. "I've looked at Jarrod Bowen for some years now, and I really like the way he plays football, and what he offers West Ham," he said. "I joined Liverpool when I was 28 or 29. There are a good couple of years left in him. He would fit the bill whenever Mo was ready to go, and even now, you still get a couple of good years at least out of him."
Aldridge emphasised Bowen's Premier League experience and consistency, noting that he could deliver around 15 goals and numerous assists per season. "Jarrod Bowen is a more solid option than some younger players because he's used to the Premier League, he's used to British life," he added. "For someone to take over from Mohamed Salah, it's got to be someone solid, someone who's done it. Ticks all the boxes, has experience. Someone with pace, we need pace."
Jurgen Klopp's High Praise for Bowen
Aldridge's endorsement echoes previous admiration from former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. Klopp has publicly praised Bowen on multiple occasions, once calling him "probably my favourite player besides my players" before a Carabao Cup match in December 2023. He also remarked in November 2021, "I like Bowen a lot. He made his way up from Hull and took not too long to get there, to show exactly what kind of player he can be in the Premier League as well."
Months later, Klopp further lauded Bowen's development, saying, "Bowen, what a player he became, unbelievable. We saw him at Hull as well, and he was really good that time, but I'm not sure many people expected this jump. Unbelievable player."
Transfer Dynamics and West Ham's Situation
Bowen joined West Ham from Hull City in January 2020 and has since become a key figure, scoring 84 goals in 274 games. His current contract runs until June 2030, which could necessitate a substantial transfer fee for Liverpool. However, if West Ham face relegation this season, the Reds might secure a more affordable deal, as Aldridge suggested. "If West Ham stay up, then it would be hard to get him, and he's probably not what the owners look at, age-wise," he noted, while still advocating for the move.
This potential transfer aligns with Liverpool's need for a proven, pacey forward to maintain their attacking threat post-Salah. With Arne Slot at the helm, the club's chances of landing Bowen could be influenced by West Ham's league status and broader market conditions.
As Liverpool prepare for Salah's departure, the endorsements from Aldridge and Klopp position Jarrod Bowen as a compelling candidate to fill the void, blending experience, skill, and familiarity with English football's demands.
