Liverpool: Spurs eye Gakpo as Barcola talks continue

Liverpool's urgency to strengthen their squad has intensified after their pre-season tour of the USA ended with a 4-2 defeat to Leeds United on Sunday night. The Reds have made only one signing this summer, Spanish winger Victor Munoz, with defender Jeremy Jacquet also arriving following an agreement in February.

Pre-season defeat raises concerns

Liverpool dominated the first half, establishing a 2-0 lead, but a heavily rotated side was overwhelmed after the interval, handing head coach Andoni Iraola his first loss. The result has prompted supporters on social media to demand reinforcements in defence and attack before the transfer window closes.

Barcola talks to continue

According to Fabrizio Romano, renewed contact between Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain is expected this week regarding Bradley Barcola. Romano said on his YouTube channel: "New contacts [will be] prepared between Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain." He added that "conversations will continue next week," though no agreement is close, giving Liverpool more time to finalise a deal.

PSG are reportedly seeking around £145m for the French international, but Liverpool are keen to reduce that figure. Romano suggested the deal could drag on, saying it now "depends on Liverpool, on how much they want to spend."

Spurs eye Gakpo

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, but the Reds are reluctant to sell. Sky Sports reports that Liverpool would only sanction his departure if a suitable replacement is found. The Netherlands international has four years left on his contract, and talkSPORT suggests Liverpool would demand around £70m.

Gakpo made 52 appearances last season, scoring nine goals and providing six assists. If he left without a replacement, Liverpool would rely on teenage prospect Rio Ngumoha and new signing Victor Munoz out wide.

Spurs have spent £237m this summer, and manager Roberto De Zerbi hinted at more activity: "The transfer market, it's not finished for sure, but we completed 60 per cent of our project in the transfer market. Now we have another bomba!"

Gakpo joined Liverpool in January 2023 from PSV Eindhoven for about £37m, making 180 appearances with 50 goals and 23 assists, including playing a part in the 2025 Premier League title win.
