Liverpool 2-3 Fenerbahce: Player ratings as Reds throw away lead
Liverpool player ratings: 4/10s as Reds lose 3-2 to Fenerbahce

Liverpool lost 3-2 to Fenerbahce in the Champions League on an embarrassing night in Istanbul, despite twice taking the lead against the Turkish giants.

Trey Nyoni put the Reds ahead after 25 minutes with his first Champions League goal, but a deflected Mason Greenwood free-kick levelled the score four minutes later. Alexander Isak restored Liverpool's lead shortly after coming on as a substitute, yet the Premier League club only led for four minutes before Archie Brown tapped into an empty net after a mix-up between Alisson and Cody Gakpo.

Defensive errors prove costly

Vedat Muriqi's header found the bottom corner to send the home crowd wild and secure a famous result for Fenerbahce, who were managed by former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt. The defeat leaves Liverpool to rue a string of avoidable goals, with Alisson particularly frustrated.

Alisson was rated 4/10 after being caught in no man's land for the second Fenerbahce goal and poor for the winner, refusing to come off his line when he should have met the cross. He was also furious with Jeremy Jacquet for the Greenwood goal which wrong-footed him.

Individual performances

Joe Gomez earned a 6/10 for a terrific cross in the first half and solid defending, though he drilled one shot well wide before being subbed. Jacquet was marked down to 4/10 after missing a header early on and turning his back on the ball in the wall for Greenwood's deflected goal.

Virgil van Dijk received 5/10, having played an important role in the build-up to Nyoni's goal but failing to command his backline as Liverpool crumbled from 2-1 up. Kostas Tsimikas was fortunate not to concede a penalty after a shove on Greenwood and struggled defensively, earning 4/10.

Midfield and attack

Alexis Mac Allister was comfortable on the ball and had a header saved, but the game got away from him in the second half. Trey Nyoni impressed with his controlled volley past Ederson, becoming Liverpool's second youngest Champions League goalscorer ever.

Dominik Szoboszlai delivered some great balls into the box but conceded the free-kick Fenerbahce equalised from. Rio Ngumoha was Liverpool's most threatening starting attacker with some lovely dribbles, while Bradley Barcola fluffed an early chance and was anonymous in a central role.

Substitutes make an impact

Cody Gakpo was dangerous after coming on and his cross led to Isak's goal, but he played an unfortunate role in Brown's goal. Alexander Isak scored his seventh goal of the season and first in the Champions League just three minutes after coming on.

Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez failed to really impact the game, while Lewis Koumas came on too late for a rating. The defeat leaves Liverpool to reflect on a night where they twice threw away a lead in Turkey.
