Liverpool FC legends have been soaking up the sights of New York City during the club's pre-season tour of the United States. The tour began with a 4-2 victory over Sunderland in Nashville and continues with a match against Wrexham at Yankee Stadium, kicking off at 12.30am on Thursday, July 30.
Empire State Building Visit
Ambassadors Robbie Fowler, Ian Rush, Natasha Dowie and Phil Thompson visited the Empire State Building on Monday, where they were joined by talk show host and Reds fan John Oliver. The Liverpool FC Instagram account posted: "A number of our legends enjoyed fantastic views of New York as they joined comedian John Oliver for a visit to the @empirestatebldg today."
Digital creator Mickey Blank, who captured the encounter on social media, said: "Not every day you’re hanging out at the Empire State Building and John Oliver casually joins a photo with Liverpool royalty!"
Meeting with Sheamus
Other clips circulating online showed the Liverpool legends with former WWE superstar Sheamus, now known by his real name Stephen Farrelly. The 48-year-old Dubliner spoke to the ECHO last year about his lifelong passion for Liverpool, which began when he was eight years old during the era of Ronnie Whelan, John Aldridge, Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton.
His interest in football was sparked at the start of Euro '88 when his uncle, who lived in England, brought Liverpool memorabilia back to Ireland. Sheamus said: "I feel like Liverpool is my home away from home. Just across the pond and it reminds me so much of Dublin. Everyone knows each other and is happy. You go into a bar and people ask if you want a pint, it's that kind of city. It's a great community. That's what I love about it. It does feel very Irish." He added with a laugh: "If you don't want to pay the baggage fees with Ryanair, you could just swim across."
