Liverpool Face Monumental Task Replacing Salah
Liverpool have been warned they cannot simply replace departing star Mohamed Salah with a single player this summer. The Egyptian forward confirmed his exit at the season's end, leaving a massive void at Anfield.
Mohamed Salah announced his Liverpool departure in an emotional social media video, stating: "I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season. Liverpool is not just a football club, it's a passion, it's a history, it's a spirit."
The 33-year-old has been a cornerstone of the club since his 2017 arrival, amassing 255 goals and 122 assists in 435 appearances. He was instrumental in last season's Premier League title triumph with 29 goals and 18 assists.
Friedel's Replacement Strategy
Former Liverpool goalkeeper Brad Friedel insists manager Arne Slot and the board must approach this challenge strategically. "Go replace Thierry Henry at Arsenal. It doesn't recreate itself like that," Friedel told Gambling.com.
Friedel suggested Liverpool need multiple signings rather than seeking a direct one-for-one replacement. "I think they'll collectively be trying to bring in two or three, change the system a little bit," he explained.
The American specifically mentioned potential targets: "Go get an Adam Wharton and then go maybe try to get an Ousmane Dembele or something like that. I don't know if Dembele would come, but something like that where you're tweaking the system."
Tactical Adjustments Required
Friedel believes Liverpool must compensate for Salah's departure through tactical evolution rather than simply finding another prolific winger. "To replace the goal ratio and assist ratio that someone like Salah would have...I think you have to look two ways," he said.
The former goalkeeper proposed a defensive solution: "I think you have to look at conceding less and then scoring probably a little bit less than Salah did. But if you're conceding less, then you can have that same type of ratio."
He emphasized the difficulty of finding a direct replacement: "I think it would be very difficult to say, Salah's gone, so let's go get the one person that's going to go score us 34 goals a season. That's not easily done as a winger, by the way, not as a nine."
Existing Squad Development
Friedel also highlighted the importance of developing current players alongside new signings. He mentioned Alexander Isak needing "a much different season" after injury troubles and Florian Wirtz requiring adaptation time.
"Wirtz will have - who I think is an excellent player, but needed a little bit of time for the Premier League - he'll have that now," Friedel said. "I think we'll see a very good Wirtz next season as well."
Salah's emotional farewell message reflected his deep connection to the club: "Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will be always one of you. This club will always be my home to me and my family."
The forward's departure marks the end of an era for Liverpool, with Friedel's comments underscoring the complex challenge facing Slot as he prepares for his first summer transfer window without the Egyptian superstar.
