Luke Littler Aims for Trophy Clean Sweep After UK Open Defence

World champion Luke Littler has declared his ambition to secure a clean sweep of all major trophies in 2026, following his successful defence of the UK Open title in Minehead. The teenage sensation overcame veteran James Wade with an 11-7 victory in the final, marking the second consecutive year he has triumphed over the same opponent in this prestigious tournament.

Littler's Determined Pursuit of Excellence

Despite a somewhat sluggish start to the Premier League season, Littler began the year by clinching his second world championship, and he is now firmly focused on dominating the darts circuit. "That's obviously the main aim," Littler stated when questioned about the possibility of winning every available major honour this year. "The Premier League win in Cardiff on Thursday was massive, lifting me from seventh to third place. It wasn't the start I wanted, but that victory meant a lot, and coming here to retain the UK Open trophy is equally significant."

Reflecting on his performance throughout the tournament, Littler acknowledged moments of imperfection. "There were several close matches, and I wasn't always at my best. I missed too many doubles that I would typically expect to hit. However, we got the job done, and for the first time in a decade, just like at the worlds, someone has gone back-to-back."

Historic Achievement in the 'FA Cup of Darts'

By defeating Wade, Littler became only the fourth player in history to secure back-to-back UK Open titles, and the first since Michael van Gerwen achieved the feat in 2015 and 2016. This victory earned him the top prize of £120,000 in an event renowned as the 'FA Cup of darts', which started with 160 competitors and culminated in a showdown between Littler and Wade, who was vying for his fourth UK Open crown.

The final saw Littler initially dominate, winning the first three legs and threatening a repeat of last year's one-sided 11-2 triumph. Wade demonstrated resilience, levelling the score at 6-6 and then 7-7, despite his average being approximately ten points lower than Littler's. A pivotal moment occurred in the 15th leg when Wade missed a bullseye opportunity, allowing Littler to seize control with a crucial 116 checkout. From there, Littler accelerated to the finish line, securing the win even without displaying his absolute best form.

Challenging Path to the Final

Earlier in the competition, Littler faced a stern test in the semi-finals against Josh Rock. The world number one struggled with his finishing, missing 16 consecutive darts at a double and falling behind 5-1. However, he showcased his champion's mentality by digging deep to rally from a 9-7 deficit and ultimately prevail 11-9, maintaining his flawless record against Rock across seven matches.

In the other semi-final, Wade ended Gerwyn Price's quest for a first UK Open title. Wade took command by winning six successive legs to lead 9-5 and went on to secure an 11-8 victory, impressively hitting 11 maximum 180s and averaging 105.53.

Littler's retention of the UK Open title underscores his growing dominance in the sport and sets the stage for an ambitious campaign to capture every major trophy in 2026, reinforcing his status as one of darts' most formidable competitors.
