Luke Littler has admitted he is 'gutted' that no one managed to hit a nine-darter during the Saudi Darts Masters, despite clinching the title with an 8-5 victory over Michael van Gerwen in the final. The 18-year-old, who turns 19 on Wednesday, pocketed the £30,000 prize and described the win as an ideal early birthday present.
Littler, known as 'The Nuke', impressed throughout the tournament at the Global Theatre in Riyadh. He defeated Paul Lim 6-1 on Monday, then overcame Gian van Veen 6-4 and Gerwyn Price 7-5 to set up a final clash with his long-time rival van Gerwen.
Reflecting on his triumph, Littler said: 'Very happy to win. Obviously, celebrating my birthday tomorrow. Going to go over to Dubai with my family and girlfriend, and yeah, have three days off.' However, he expressed disappointment that no player achieved a nine-dart finish, which would have earned a £74,700 bonus.
'Obviously it's on everyone's minds – all the players know what's up for grabs so if you get the first treble and then miss, you are gutted. But hopefully we can come back next year and somebody can hit a nine-darter,' Littler added.
The atmosphere in Riyadh contrasted sharply with the lively crowds at Alexandra Palace. Gerwyn Price praised the audience, saying they were 'watching and engaged in the darts'. Nathan Aspinall, however, was less enthusiastic, noting the crowd lacked energy and appeared not entirely voluntary. After his match, Aspinall softened his stance, acknowledging the crowd improved.
