The Hidden Realities of Life as a Footballer's Partner
The glamorous image of being married to a professional footballer often masks a more complex reality. Wives and girlfriends, commonly referred to as WAGs, frequently struggle against stereotypes that reduce them to mere accessories to their partners' fame. They are persistently categorised in ways that can feel restrictive and undervalue their own identities and achievements.
Beyond the Trophy Wife Label
Take Victoria Beckham as a prime example. Long before becoming a fashion icon, she achieved global stardom as a member of the Spice Girls, winning five Brit Awards. Her career has consistently demonstrated that she is far more than just "David's wife," establishing herself as a formidable businesswoman and designer in her own right.
The lifestyle also brings significant personal challenges. The constant travel required of professional footballers can create profound loneliness for their partners. Louise Redknapp famously described feeling "invisible" during her marriage to former Tottenham and Liverpool star Jamie Redknapp, a relationship that ultimately ended in divorce in 2017.
Lisa Muller's Personal Journey
Lisa Muller, married to Bayern Munich legend Thomas Muller, has now shared her own experiences, revealing that life as a WAG is not always as idyllic as it appears. At 36 years old, Lisa has built a successful career as a professional dressage rider, with notable victories including the Stuttgart Masters in 2019.
Despite her accomplishments, she has often been perceived primarily as Thomas Muller's wife rather than as the accomplished athlete she is. "At first, I tried for a long time to fight against it and say: I'm more than that, I can ride," Lisa explained during a campaign event. "Now I don't care anymore."
A Marriage Spanning Continents
Thomas and Lisa met in 2007 when both were 18, marrying just two years later. Their relationship has predominantly been based in Bavaria, where Thomas spent 17 years with Bayern Munich and Lisa pursued her equestrian career.
However, Thomas's recent move to MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps has introduced a new dynamic. Lisa chose to remain in Germany to continue her career, creating a separation of 5,200 miles between them. "As an athlete, he knows how much I live for my sport. As an athlete, I know how much he lives for his," she stated. "The decision to continue working on two continents wasn't easy for us."
Career Commitments and Business Ventures
Lisa has been unequivocal about not abandoning her professional life for her husband's career opportunities. She maintains an active riding schedule and manages her own stables. Together with Thomas, she co-owns EU Insemination Station, a successful horse breeding farm that generates substantial additional income.
This commitment to her career reportedly influenced a major transfer decision. In 2015, when Thomas was close to joining Manchester United, former manager Louis van Gaal suggested Lisa's preference to stay in Bavaria was a key factor in the transfer not materialising.
Political Aspirations and Personal Growth
Beyond equestrian sports, Lisa is expanding her horizons through political involvement. She has joined the Christian Social Union party in Germany and completed an internship with the Bavarian State Parliament. Although she declined to run as a candidate in the next election, describing herself as "too much of a chicken," she remains actively engaged.
"The CSU is my political home," she told Antenne Bayern radio station, indicating that she may consider candidacy in the future. This political engagement represents another dimension of her identity beyond being a footballer's wife.
Challenging Perceptions
Despite her multifaceted life, Lisa still encounters assumptions about her intellect. "I'm always considered the dumbest person in the room," she noted. "Sometimes it's nice to be considered the silly one, then you can impress people more when they talk to you."
Her story underscores the broader reality that being a WAG involves navigating complex identities, maintaining personal careers, and challenging reductive stereotypes—all while supporting partners in the demanding world of professional football.
