The sister of football icon Lionel Messi has been seriously injured in a car accident in Miami, leading to the postponement of her upcoming wedding to a member of Inter Miami's coaching staff.
Serious Injuries in Miami Collision
Maria Sol Messi, 32, was driving in Miami when she lost control of her vehicle and collided with a wall. The accident, which occurred recently, left the clothing designer and entrepreneur with significant injuries. According to reports from Argentinian media, she sustained two fractured vertebrae, a fractured heel, and a fractured wrist, alongside suffering burns.
Argentinian TV journalist Angel de Brito, who communicated with the Messi family, provided details on the LAM programme. He stated that while Maria Sol is now "out of danger," she faces a long period of rehabilitation. The nature of her injuries, particularly the spinal damage and burns, requires extensive treatment and recovery time.
Wedding Plans Put on Hold
The accident has had an immediate and profound impact on her personal life. Maria Sol was due to marry Julian "Tuli" Arellano, a coach for Inter Miami's under-19 team, in her hometown of Rosario, Argentina, on January 3. That ceremony has now been officially suspended.
Her famous brother, Lionel Messi, had celebrated his own wedding to Antonela Roccuzzo in the same city, and the entire family, including the Inter Miami star, was expected to attend. The couple's story mirrors that of Lionel and Antonela, having met as children growing up in the same neighbourhood in Rosario.
Family Confirmation and Recovery
Angel de Brito shared that he confirmed the news directly with the footballer's mother, Celia Cuccittini. "I asked her mum Celia Cuccittini because I’d received some information and she told me it’s true but that Maria Sol is okay," he explained. He added that Maria Sol has already begun her rehabilitation process in Rosario.
While some initial reports suggested the burns may have been consistent with a motorbike accident, this has not been confirmed. The primary account states she was driving a pick-up truck when she fainted, leading to the collision.
Known for maintaining a low profile, Maria Sol previously lived in Spain and worked at her brother's Messi Store brand before returning to Argentina to pursue her own business ventures. Her recovery is now the sole focus for the closely-knit Messi family.
