Myles Lewis-Skelly has abruptly climbed in Arsenal's midfield pecking order, marking a remarkable turnaround after a challenging season. The 19-year-old's resurgence has been pivotal for the Gunners as they push for the Premier League title.
Dramatic Win Over West Ham
Arsenal secured a 1-0 victory against West Ham, moving five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table with two matches remaining—Burnley at home and Crystal Palace away. City have a game in hand, facing Palace, Bournemouth, and Aston Villa. The win was sealed after a late West Ham equalizer was disallowed following a VAR review for a foul on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. Referee Chris Kavanagh announced, "Final decision, direct free-kick," sparking relief and joy in the Arsenal camp.
Lewis-Skelly described the dressing room atmosphere: "It is just a huge sense of relief. Joy, excitement, fulfillment—everything you can describe. We are buzzing, but we know the job is not done. We have two more finals left." Regarding the VAR drama, he added, "I don't even know… it was just God on our side. We are so grateful."
Lewis-Skelly's Personal Journey
The teenager's season has been a rollercoaster. After a stellar breakthrough last season—15 Premier League starts, a goal against Manchester City, and an England debut goal—he struggled for minutes this campaign. His second league start came on April 11 against Bournemouth, a disastrous defeat. However, Mikel Arteta's "gut feeling" decision to start him in midfield against Fulham nine days ago changed everything. Lewis-Skelly delivered a driving performance in a 3-0 win, earning starts in the Champions League semi-final second leg against Atlético Madrid and the West Ham clash.
"It was tough for me initially," Lewis-Skelly admitted. "But I pride myself on mental strength. Sport is not one pathway—there are ups and downs. It's how you bounce back from adversity that defines you. I spoke with my family and friends, telling them I didn't want to hear social media noise. I stayed focused, prepared as a starter, and when my chance came against Fulham, I took it."
Midfield Role and Future
Lewis-Skelly has now climbed above Martín Zubimendi in the midfield pecking order, though he faces competition from captain Martin Ødegaard. Against West Ham, he shifted to left-back when Ødegaard came on, showing his versatility. "It feels so natural for me to be in midfield," Lewis-Skelly said. "I've been training there a lot, so I felt comfortable. The boss told me to go for it, and I had to be bold and play with courage."
Speculation about his future has surfaced amid his struggles, but Lewis-Skelly remains focused. "I am focused on the games we have coming up and bringing this club back to glory," he said. With Arsenal chasing the title and a Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on the horizon, his resurgence could not be more timely.
