Leeds fan Colin Westby dies after Man Utd medical emergency

Leeds United have confirmed the death of supporter Colin Westby, 68, who suffered a medical emergency during the club's 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Elland Road on Sunday, October 18. Westby was taken to hospital, where he was placed in a medically induced coma; after a period of unresponsiveness, the decision was made to withdraw life support.

Club pays tribute to lifelong fan

In a statement on their website, Leeds United said: "Leeds United are heartbroken to learn of the passing of supporter Colin Westby at the age of 68. Colin was a long-standing Season Ticket Holder at the club, attending matches for over 50 years."

The club added that they will pay tribute to Westby in the 68th minute of their next Premier League fixture with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, November 7. Full plans for the tribute have yet to be released.

Response from stewards and supporters

Following Westby's illness, Leeds praised the supporters and stewards who ensured he received medical attention as soon as possible. A statement at the time read: "The club is grateful for the rapid action of our stewards and medical support team and appreciates the many notes of interest and support that have been sent in the past 24 hours."

Tributes have continued to flood in on social media, with one Leeds fan posting on X: "Awful news, so sorry to hear. Rest easy Colin, thoughts with his family and friends." Another wrote: "Really sad, sending love strength and condolences to his family and friends and all those that tried to save him ALAW (All Leeds Aren't We)."

A former colleague said: "Thoughts and prayers to his family & friends. I worked with Colin for a good few years - enjoyed a pint and a football chat."

Leeds drew the match against Manchester United 1-1 thanks to Dominic Calvert-Lewin's equaliser in the second half. They currently sit 11th in the Premier League table, having picked up 11 points from their opening nine games. In their last match, Daniel Farke's side lost 1-0 away to Bournemouth.
