Leeds 1-1 Man Utd: Calvert-Lewin denies Carrick's side first win in six

Dominic Calvert-Lewin's second-half equaliser denied Manchester United their first win in six games, piling more pressure on manager Michael Carrick at a white-hot Elland Road. Bryan Mbeumo had given the visitors a 35th-minute lead, but Calvert-Lewin struck after the break to make it honours even.

United's winless run extends

If Carrick returned across the Pennines feeling satisfied, he shouldn't have done. The United boss insists he has the best job possible and is still 'loving it', but no manager in their right mind should be loving the fact their side has not won a single game for more than five weeks, or kept a clean sheet in the league all season.

At this rate, United will be airing the club's dirty laundry in public again by sacking another manager. Carrick had needed this trip to Elland Road like a hole in the head. The cauldron of hate is bad enough in normal circumstances, let alone when United had not won in five games in all competitions.

A fiery first half

Leeds never need an excuse to pile pain on their bitter rivals, but on this occasion the hosts must have been relishing the visit of Carrick's men more than ever. Leeds went into this clash above United in the table, the last time this happened being back in 2002, which was also the last time Leeds beat United at home. But this time round United appeared vulnerable and there for the taking.

Not least because United started with a right back at left back, and a centre back at right back, while Lisandro Martinez owed his manager a big performance considering his outburst in the wake of the defeat at Atletico Madrid. Most of the first half was high on toxicity and low on quality. Ethan Ampadu made three crunching tackles on Andrey Santos, Kobbie Mainoo and Mbeumo, while Bruno Fernandes and Gabriel Gudmundsson were booked for two crude challenges of their own.

But a football match broke out just before the half hour mark. Nico Elvedi saw a header well saved by Senne Lammens, while at the opposite end Youri Tielemans put a chance on a plate for Mbeumo, who made a complete meal of it by heading wide with just James Trafford to beat. Trafford then had to charge from goal to stop Amad Diallo.

Calvert-Lewin levels

Ten minutes before the break, Mbeumo made amends to give United the lead. He brushed aside a feeble challenge from James Justin to meet another Tielemans cross and beat Trafford with a cool finish. Ao Tanaka shot straight at Lammens before Calvert-Lewin headed just wide, as Leeds looked to hit back.

They eventually did six minutes into the second half, when Calvert-Lewin lashed home from close range after United had failed to deal with a corner. Leeds had their tails up, and Tanaka smashed a volley over the top. Harry Maguire was fortunate to avoid conceding a penalty after pulling Ampadu to the ground inside the box.

Tensions continued to simmer, with Ampadu and Fernandes involved in a spiteful exchange of words, while Tanaka left Diallo writhing in pain following a brutal but legal tackle. Fernandes dragged a shot wide and Anton Stach blazed over as both sides went in search of a winner. But in truth, the game didn't deserve one.
