Kobbie Mainoo is ‘the future of Manchester United’, insists Amorim

Ruben Amorim has declared that Kobbie Mainoo is “the future of Manchester United”, offering strong backing for the 20-year-old despite not starting him in any of the club’s 17 Premier League matches this season. Mainoo is currently sidelined with a calf injury and will miss the Boxing Day fixture against Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

Amorim highlighted Mainoo’s versatility, stating he can play in multiple midfield roles. “The position of Casemiro, he can do it. He can play if we play with three in midfield. He can play like we play in the position of Mason Mount,” the head coach said. He added that Mainoo must “wait for each chance” but insisted that “everything can change in football in two days”.

Earlier this month, Amorim indicated he was open to a loan move for Mainoo, but has now clarified that such a move would only be possible if a replacement is signed. “If we are not getting someone, it is hard to leave,” he said. United’s hierarchy do not want to sell the player.

With captain Bruno Fernandes injured and Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo away at the Africa Cup of Nations, Mainoo could see more game time upon his return. Amorim also suggested he may adapt his preferred 3-4-3 system, noting that playing it perfectly would require significant spending and time.

On Casemiro and Harry Maguire, both in the final year of their contracts, Amorim said no decision has been made. Casemiro’s deal includes a one-year option, but his £365,000 weekly wage makes an extension unlikely. Amorim praised Casemiro’s work ethic, saying: “If everyone trains like him, we will be a top team.”
