Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he is in discussions with the German Football Association (DFB) about becoming the next manager of the national team. The former Liverpool boss, currently head of global football at Red Bull, revealed the approach on Magenta TV during his punditry work at the 2026 World Cup.
The vacancy arose after Julian Nagelsmann resigned following Germany's elimination from the World Cup. Nagelsmann had led the team to the round of 32, where they lost to Paraguay on penalties, missing a potential last-16 clash with France.
Klopp, 59, acknowledged his existing contract with Red Bull but expressed hope that the company would not block his departure. 'I need to talk to Oliver Mintzlaff. He's my employer. We've already discussed things. I assume he won't stand in my way,' Klopp said. He added that he wants Red Bull 'to come out of this clean' and that he is ready to return to football management after a two-year break from the touchline.
The DFB had earlier issued a statement confirming their interest in Klopp, saying: 'Regarding the appointment of a new coach, the DFB leadership will now seek talks with Jurgen Klopp. He has already signalled his general willingness to take on the position.'
