Kieron Bowie's rapid ascent in Italian football has taken another turn. After swapping Hibernian for Hellas Verona in January, the striker has now joined Sassuolo on loan with an option to buy, ensuring he will remain in Serie A for the upcoming season.
Bowie's brief time in Italy has been a rollercoaster. He scored against Juventus at the Allianz Stadium and silenced the San Siro crowd with a goal against Inter, but also suffered the pain of relegation with Verona and missed out on Scotland's World Cup squad.
Sassuolo's Sporting Director Praises Bowie
Sassuolo sporting director Francesco Palmieri expressed confidence in the 24-year-old: "In just a few months in Italy he has shown his value. He has important characteristics and is still quite young at 24. I'm convinced that he can contribute to this group and help us take steps forward."
Bowie will find a familiar face in the squad. His new team-mate Josh Doig, another Scot, followed a similar path from Hibernian to Verona in 2022 before joining Sassuolo 18 months later. The pair could become the third and fourth Scots to play together in Serie A, following Billy Gilmour and Scott McTominay at Napoli, provided Doig remains at the club amid transfer speculation.
Club in Transition
Sassuolo finished an impressive 11th last season, but are undergoing significant changes. General manager Giovanni Carnevali, who was instrumental in establishing the club as a Serie A regular over 12 years, has departed for Juventus. Coach Fabio Grosso has also left for Fiorentina, replaced by former Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani.
Aquilani is seen as a rising coaching talent after guiding Catanzaro to the Serie B play-off final last year. Bowie is his first major signing and will compete with Andrea Pinamonti, who scored nine league goals last season, for a starting spot. "He's a young and important player, with useful abilities that we are lacking right now," Aquilani said. "He will definitely give us a hand."
Modest Roots, Big Reputation
Despite their top-flight status, Sassuolo have humble origins. The town of Sassuolo has a population of around 40,000, and the club only reached Serie B in 2008 and Serie A in 2013. They play 30 kilometres away at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia, one of only five Serie A clubs to own their ground.
The club has earned a reputation as a talent factory, having developed players like Manuel Locatelli, Giacomo Raspadori, and Gianluca Scamacca. This summer, defender Tarik Muharemovic moved to Leeds for £34 million, highlighting the club's ability to produce and sell top talent.
Looking Ahead
Promising Juventus midfielder Vasilije Adzic has also joined, while star man Armand Lauriente and club legend Domenico Berardi remain. However, key midfielder Ismael Kone is sidelined after suffering a leg break while playing for Canada at the World Cup.
There is excitement around Aquilani's appointment, with Gazzetta dello Sport even comparing his tactics to Pep Guardiola. Veteran midfielder Nemanja Matic has publicly targeted Europe, though Aquilani laughed it off: "He was joking. It's fine, ambition must be part of our way of thinking."
For Bowie, this move provides a major platform to continue his promising start in Serie A.
