Keane: Lammens 'costing' Manchester United

Roy Keane has criticised Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, saying the £18m signing is 'costing' the club during a difficult season.

Lammens joined United from Royal Antwerp in the summer of 2025 and impressed in his first campaign at Old Trafford, displacing Andre Onana as the first-choice goalkeeper. His performances helped United qualify for the Champions League and earned praise from Sir Alex Ferguson.

Dip in form

This season, however, the 24-year-old has struggled. United have conceded 13 goals in eight Premier League games, the seventh-most in the division. Lammens also conceded six goals in United's last two Champions League matches and three more in a home defeat to Bournemouth.

Speaking on The Overlap, Keane said: 'Going back to Manchester United, the goalkeeper is costing them, isn't he? He was very good last year.'

Scholes also questions Lammens

Paul Scholes has also questioned the Belgian, saying last month that the 'jury was still out' on him. Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes said: 'What team have you seen win the Premier League without a top-class goalkeeper? Lammens might be that, I don't know, I think the jury's probably still out on that. You need a top class goalkeeper. You think of Liverpool's team with Alisson, City's teams, Raya at Arsenal. Man United with Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar. They've all got brilliant, brilliant goalkeepers. You start from the back, of course you do.'

Lammens responds

During the recent international break, Lammens addressed concerns over his form, insisting he had to be 'mentally strong' playing for a club the size of Manchester United. He said: 'I have not changed character by playing football at Manchester United. You have to be mentally strong and self-confident in the face of all those people who express their opinions. I can imagine that this is not easy for everyone. I love playing all those Premier League matches. Premier League, Nations League…. That doesn't feel any different.'

Manchester United, who are 16th in the Premier League after eight games, travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea on Saturday.
