The United squad featured several recognisable surnames, including Michael Carrick's son Jacey and Silva Mexes, son of Robert Earnshaw. Kai, who has been impressing for the Under-18s, returned to the younger age group for the final. A photograph of the 16-year-old with a medal around his neck was shared on Wayne Rooney's social media.
Kai has enjoyed an outstanding year, scoring goals for the Under-18s and earning his first scholarship in the club's youth set-up. He will be eligible to sign a professional contract next season. The Under-18s have also reached the FA Youth Cup semi-final and the Premier League Cup final, with Kai expected to feature in those matches.
The Premier League Shield success highlights the strength of United's academy and its promising prospects. Kai has also signed with Triple S Sports, an agency with a longstanding relationship with his father, which counts Harry Maguire among its clients.
Speaking to The Times, Coleen Rooney said her son is accustomed to the spotlight because of his famous surname. She noted that from a young age people would approach him and ask if he was Wayne Rooney's son, but added that he is strong-minded and they have no worries about how he handles it. She said the family can guide him, but ultimately it is his life and passion.
