Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert surprised his teammates by wearing red-tinted contact lenses during training camp. The lenses, which he tested under sunny skies on Thursday, are designed to reduce glare and help him see the field more clearly.
Herbert explained that the contacts function like sunglasses, allowing him to avoid squinting. He had previously tried a tinted visor but found it required constant cleaning. The quarterback noted that his teammates reacted with surprise when he joined the huddle, but quickly expressed confidence in his performance.
Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker revealed that he and Herbert wore the red contacts to dinner recently, describing their appearance as vampire-like. Dicker added that people initially failed to recognise them, which they found amusing.
Herbert indicated that he might wear the contacts during games if he obtains a medical prescription for sensitive eyes, stating that any improvement in vision would be beneficial.
