Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has expressed his disappointment after a minute’s silence honouring Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva was cut short by the referee during the Community Shield at Wembley. The tribute, which took place before kick-off between Liverpool and Crystal Palace, was interrupted by a minority of supporters from the Palace end, prompting a strong response from other fans attempting to restore silence.
Jota and his brother died in a car crash in Spain on 3 July. Wreaths were laid on the pitch by Liverpool legend Ian Rush, Palace chairman Steve Parish, and FA chair Debbie Hewitt, while images of the siblings were displayed on the big screens. Liverpool fans displayed a banner reading “Diogo J” and sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone” as a mark of respect.
Speaking after the match, Van Dijk said: “Yes, I am disappointed. That is the only thing I can say. I don’t know who did that but there was plenty trying to shush it down, but obviously that doesn’t help it.” He added: “It is disappointing to hear that, but if that person or those persons can go home and be happy with themselves, then …”
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot took a more diplomatic tone, focusing on the widespread respect shown. “I am a positive person and if I look at the respect that has been paid to them both, I don’t think he had a bad intention, the guy or guys,” Slot said. “The fans of Crystal Palace and everywhere around the world have paid huge respect to Diogo and Andre.”
