Enzo Fernández scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser as managerless Chelsea held Manchester City to a 3-3 draw at the Etihad Stadium, denting Pep Guardiola's title aspirations. The Argentina international poked home after a scramble at the far post in the sixth minute of added time, capping a remarkable comeback by the visitors under interim boss Calum McFarlane.
McFarlane, the club's under-21 coach, was thrust into the role on New Year's Day after Enzo Maresca's sacking. Despite never having taken charge of a senior match, he masterminded a resilient performance, with smart substitutions including former City striker Liam Delap. Chelsea had fallen behind to Rayan Cherki's first-half strike and looked set for defeat before Fernández intervened.
City had taken the lead through Cherki after a slip by Benoît Badiashile, and they appeared in control until late on. McFarlane's side pushed for an equaliser, and after Cole Palmer missed a chance in the 89th minute, Fernández made no mistake with his third attempt from close range. The goal came from Malo Gusto's cross, which deflected before reaching the Argentine.
The result leaves City six points adrift of leaders Arsenal, who won earlier on Sunday. Guardiola, furious at the concession, saw his team fail to capitalise on Arsenal's slip-up. City had dominated large periods, with Erling Haaland hitting the post in the first half, but were undone by Chelsea's late rally.
For McFarlane, it was a dream debut. The one-time City youth coach said the fixture was about more than his personal duel with Guardiola, but he will remember this day for the rest of his career. Chelsea hope to appoint a permanent successor to Maresca before Wednesday's derby at Fulham, with Strasbourg's Liam Rosenior the favourite.
