John Terry has revealed that he no longer wishes to become a manager, despite previously stating that was his ambition after leaving Aston Villa. The 41-year-old former Chelsea captain turned down three job offers and was unsuccessful in two interviews before deciding to step away from coaching altogether.
Terry, who currently works as a coaching consultant at Chelsea, told fans during an Instagram Q&A that his focus has shifted. 'When I left Villa, that was the aim. I won't be managing or coaching in the future,' he said. 'I turned down three jobs last year and interviewed for two more, which I didn't get. It's a personal decision.'
The ex-defender left his role as Aston Villa assistant manager in July 2021 to pursue a managerial career. However, he now says he loves his current position at Chelsea and values time with his family. 'I have my role at Chelsea that I love and my family time, which means everything to me. And I get time to enjoy myself,' he added.
Terry came through Chelsea's academy and made over 700 appearances for the club, winning 17 major trophies including five Premier League titles and the Champions League. He joined Villa in 2017 as a player and later became assistant manager, helping them secure promotion to the Premier League in 2019.
The former England international also provoked controversy earlier this year by publicly supporting former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Terry called Abramovich 'the best' in a tweet that was condemned by MP Chris Bryant.
