Joe Cole Defends Liam Rosenior: Focus on Chelsea's Results, Not Press Conferences

Chelsea legend Joe Cole has launched a robust defence of manager Liam Rosenior, insisting that the focus should be squarely on how his team are performing rather than what he says in press conferences. Rosenior has won six out of his eight games since taking charge at Stamford Bridge last month, but has often found himself the subject of ridicule and social media memes.

Social Media Mockery and Player Jokes

Since his appointment, Rosenior has frequently been on the receiving end of jokes, including from his own players. Social media has been awash with memes mocking him up as TV characters like David Brent from The Office, stemming from his press conference musings. For instance, during his time at Strasbourg, he remarked that 'manage' means you are 'ageing men'.

Chelsea winger Estevao also told his new boss that he 'can't believe' he used to be a footballer after footage of him failing to control a ball during their Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to Arsenal last week went viral. Despite this, club icon Cole believes Rosenior should be heralded for his impressive start in west London rather than ridiculed.

Cole's Strong Defence of the Manager

'What I would say about Liam is that we should all stop talking about what he's said and concentrate on what his team is doing,' the 44-year-old told Daily Mail Sport. 'As a manager, you've got no interest in doing press conferences and answering questions. It's an obligation of the job. He could say something and thousands of people will pick the bones out of it and have an opinion.'

Cole emphasised that the ultimate test is how the team performs on the pitch. 'They've won six out of eight. If he can extrapolate that out for the rest of the season, they'd probably get Champions League football and will probably go far in the Champions League,' he added. He also noted the potential for an exciting narrative, with both Chelsea and Manchester United possibly having English managers pushing for a title challenge next season.

Scrutiny on English Managers

Cole, who is working as a pundit for TNT Sports, believes Rosenior is more highly scrutinised because he is English. Having played under managers like Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho during his seven trophy-laden years with Chelsea, Cole said he 'couldn't care less' about public statements as long as the behind-the-scenes relationship was strong.

'When a foreign manager is speaking broken English, they just say what they say and it comes out in a generic way… so nobody really picks the bones out of it,' Cole explained. 'But because of all the nuances of language and what you know about your own culture, it is very difficult for an English manager to express themselves.' He argued that the focus on press conferences is almost irrelevant compared to the body of work in football.

Champions League Expectations

Cole admitted that Rosenior, whom he considers a friend, must steer Chelsea to a Champions League place, otherwise the season would be a disappointment. 'This is the fourth year of the five-year plan to be competing,' the former England midfielder said. 'You would imagine leading into another summer where you can tweak the squad again that having Champions League football will be vital.'

He expressed surprise that Chelsea are not more comfortable in the league, noting the sacking of a previous manager, but praised Rosenior's great start. 'The next six weeks are crucial,' Cole stated, adding that he would expect Champions League qualification given the squad's quality.

Key Players and Future Prospects

Should Rosenior secure a Champions League spot, he will need key players fully committed. Cole Palmer, Chelsea's standout star, scored a hat-trick against Wolves and dismissed speculation linking him to Manchester United. Cole believes Palmer looks 'happy' at Stamford Bridge and emphasised the importance of building a team around such talent.

Cole also argued it would be a 'travesty' if Palmer is not included in England's World Cup squad, though he acknowledged the fierce competition among attacking players like Morgan Rogers, Phil Foden, and Jude Bellingham. 'Spaces are limited, so he has to play well. But it'll be a travesty for a player like Cole not to be on the plane,' he concluded.
