JJ Gabriel delivered a standout performance on his competitive debut for Manchester United's under-21s, scoring once and providing two assists in a 5-0 thrashing of Ipswich Town at Leigh's Progress with Unity Stadium on Monday night. The 15-year-old forward's display came just days after the senior side's defeat at Hull City, offering Michael Carrick a timely reminder of his potential.
Impressive Debut Despite Size Disadvantage
Gabriel, who is still only 15, held his own against considerably bigger Ipswich players, despite being dwarfed by several opponents. His goal and two assists capped a memorable evening for the youngster, who has been progressing through the academy ranks.
Carrick has already shown faith in Gabriel, inviting him to train with the first team last season and including him in the recent pre-season tour. The United boss spoke highly of the youngster in March, noting that Gabriel was too young to be part of a matchday squad at that time.
Carrick's Previous Praise
Speaking in March, Carrick said: "He is not allowed [to be part of a first-team squad on a matchday]. He's too young. JJ's doing really well. We've got some really good players in the academy and we try and get the younger players up [with the main group] as much as we can."
He added: "We're always trying to give them that exposure. JJ is a big talent, it is pretty obvious and he has had a good season for U18s. We think an awful lot of him. But patience is important in managing everything that comes with that and developing him and picking the right moment to step up, to leave them in a certain place. He's trained well and it is good to have young players up."
First-Team Prospects and Transfer Business
Gabriel, who turns 16 in October, was unable to play for the first team in the Premier League when last season began because he was 14. There are now no such restrictions, and it would be a surprise if he does not feature for the first team at some stage this season.
His chances of graduating to the first team could depend on United's transfer activity over the final week of the window. After a bright start to the summer, with Youri Tielemans among the arrivals, progress has stalled somewhat, leaving fans concerned that momentum built under Carrick over the second half of last season is being lost.
There has been progress in recent days, with long-time target Carlos Baleba on his way from Brighton for £70 million. He could be joined by another Brighton player, left-back Ferdi Kadioglu, and there are also calls for United to add to their attacking options.
