From Football Pitch to Coffee Machine: Jill Scott's New Chapter
Jill Scott, the former England international footballer, has traded the roar of stadium crowds for the hum of an espresso machine. The 39-year-old, who retired from professional football in 2022, now runs a coffee shop just seven miles from her old stomping ground at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium.
A Storied Football Career
Scott enjoyed a remarkable playing career, earning 161 caps for the Lionesses – making her the second-most capped player in England women's football history, trailing only Fara Williams. She was a pivotal figure in midfield, helping England secure the 2022 European Championships and playing a key role in their historic journey to Wembley Stadium.
Throughout her career, she had spells at Sunderland, Everton, and Manchester City. Fans may best remember her fiery outburst during the Euro 2022 final against Germany, where she was captured on camera unleashing her emotions with her distinctive north east accent.
The Coffee Shop Venture
Scott launched her coffee shop, BOXX2BOXX, with co-owner and fiancée Shelly Unitt. The café's name pays homage to Scott's signature role as a box-to-box midfielder for both club and country. Located near Manchester, the establishment focuses on community building.
However, Scott admits she isn't as hands-on in the daily operations as many might assume. "Yeah, I love going to the coffee shop, but I don't, to be honest, I don't do a lot of the work in there!" she told the Express.
Life After Football
Since retiring, Scott has successfully transitioned to television work. She regularly appears as a pundit on The Overlap alongside football legends like Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Jamie Carragher, and Ian Wright, where she shares her insights on the contemporary football scene.
Her media profile received a significant boost when she appeared on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! in 2022, where she was crowned Queen of the Jungle just months after leaving professional football.
Future Prospects and Soccer Aid
When questioned about potentially returning to reality TV for shows like Strictly Come Dancing or The Traitors, Scott remained non-committal. "They're all great programmes, and yeah, I think once I did the jungle, it was a good experience. So I don't know if my time in reality TV has kind of been and gone, but who knows, you never know."
Scott will participate in Soccer Aid for UNICEF at London Stadium in May, where she'll team up with current I'm A Celeb champion AngryGinge. "I loved my time in the jungle. I'm actually looking forward to catching up with AngryGinge and speaking about his time in the jungle as well," she added.
Reflections on Retirement
Explaining her diverse post-retirement activities, Scott said: "But yeah, I think once you retire, you're just kind of, if you get offered work, then you try and just do the best job that you can do. So you can probably do quite a lot of different things. But yeah, it's just great to get an opportunity, and the coffee shop is all about community as well."
The former midfielder has embraced this new phase of life, balancing her coffee shop venture with media work while maintaining her connection to football through punditry and charity events like Soccer Aid.
