Jill Scott Opens Up About True Feelings Towards Roy Keane
Jill Scott has publicly addressed her relationship with Roy Keane, firmly stating that they remain on excellent terms despite recent controversies. The former England midfielder emphasised that their interactions, often perceived as contentious, are simply "a bit of banter" between good friends.
Controversial Comments and 'Cancelled' Warnings
Roy Keane faced significant backlash after a joke made at Jill Scott's expense during an episode of The Overlap podcast. The incident involved Keane questioning the quality of a charity football match Scott participated in, leading to laughter and protests from co-host Ian Wright.
Media personality Piers Morgan subsequently warned Keane that he risked being "cancelled" by what he termed the "snowflake woke brigade" for the remark. Morgan commented on social media, suggesting the joke was "inappropriate" but humorous, sparking widespread discussion online.
Scott's Reassuring Perspective
In an exclusive interview with Mirror Football, the 39-year-old Scott clarified the situation. "Yeah, I think, obviously, in the podcast, when things are maybe going viral and stuff like that, it's all just said in good jest," she explained. "Obviously, we're good friends. So I feel like we can have a bit of banter and stuff like that."
Scott praised Keane's football insights and quick wit, describing him as "a great guy" with whom she shares a lot of fun. Her comments highlight the strong bond they have developed through their work on the popular podcast, which also features Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville, and Ian Wright.
Efforts to Involve Keane in Soccer Aid 2026
Scott, who has earned 161 caps for England, revealed she is actively trying to recruit Roy Keane for Soccer Aid 2026. The charity match, scheduled for Sunday 31st May at the London Stadium, supports UNICEF, with adult tickets starting from £20 and junior tickets from £10.
"I keep trying to get him to do Soccer Aid, actually," Scott admitted. "We've had Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher doing it, which is brilliant. So hopefully can team up with some of The Overlap guys because it would be great for them to be involved in Soccer Aid again."
She noted that Neville and Carragher have previously enjoyed participating, expressing hope that Keane might join the lineup for the upcoming event.
Broader Context and Public Reaction
The discussion around Keane's comments and Scott's response touches on broader themes of humour, sensitivity, and cancel culture in sports media. Scott's insistence that their relationship is built on mutual respect and playful exchanges serves to dispel any notions of genuine conflict.
Her remarks also underscore the camaraderie among the The Overlap team, showcasing how banter can coexist with professional admiration and personal friendship in the high-pressure world of football punditry.
