Jeff Stelling Embarks on New Podcast Venture After Sky Sports Exit
Veteran broadcaster Jeff Stelling has secured a fresh position as a brand ambassador for OLBG, marking his latest career move following a sad departure from Sky Sports. The Hartlepool-born presenter, renowned for his decades-long tenure hosting Soccer Saturday, will launch a new podcast under this role, promising candid discussions with sporting personalities.
A Storied Career and Sudden Departure
Stelling left Sky Sports at the conclusion of the 2022/23 season after a notable breakdown in his relationship with the company's management. In an interview with The Guardian, he revealed the toll it took, stating, "Every week I was fighting a battle. I got tired of fighting and it was making me ill." He expressed frustration that some of his views were disregarded, leading him to step away for his well-being.
The 70-year-old's exit was compounded by his anger over the axing of colleagues Matt Le Tissier, Charlie Nicholas, and Phil Thompson from Soccer Saturday. In his autobiography, he likened the situation to "Man City selling their entire midfield two weeks before kick-off," highlighting his devastation and the challenge of rebuilding the team.
New Opportunities and Creative Freedom
After a brief period out of work, Stelling quickly returned to broadcasting with a show on talkSPORT. His new role with OLBG grants him free rein to explore topics that may have been restricted in previous positions. He expressed enthusiasm about the podcast, saying, "I'm absolutely delighted to be joining OLBG, and am excited about how we can develop this new podcast series."
The podcast will feature guests from his extensive contacts book, including old colleagues and other sports figures. Stelling assured that it will cover "all the topics sports fans really enjoy," blending humour with seriousness, much like his career highlights.
Legacy and Future Prospects
Since the late 1970s, Jeff Stelling has been a fixture on British television and radio, becoming synonymous with football broadcasting. His move to OLBG represents a significant shift, allowing him to leverage his experience in a new digital format. This transition underscores the evolving landscape of sports media, where podcasts offer a platform for unfiltered dialogue.
Stelling's journey from Sky Sports to this new venture highlights the resilience and adaptability required in modern broadcasting. Fans can anticipate engaging content as he continues to share stories and insights from the sporting world.
