Giants Quarterback Jaxson Dart Seeks Insights from Chiefs Stars on New Coach Matt Nagy
New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart has proactively sought advice from Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce regarding his upcoming collaboration with new offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. This strategic move comes as Dart prepares to work under Nagy, who was recently hired by the Giants to bolster head coach John Harbaugh's staff.
Nagy's Appointment and Dart's Enthusiasm
Matt Nagy, who previously served two separate stints as offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, joined the Giants earlier this month. His hiring is part of a broader effort by Harbaugh to strengthen the coaching lineup, which also includes the additions of Brian Callahan as quarterbacks coach and pass-game coordinator, Greg Roman as senior offensive assistant, and Tim Kelly as tight ends coach.
Following an impressive rookie season where he recorded 24 touchdowns and only seven turnovers, Dart is particularly excited about the opportunity to play under Nagy. The 22-year-old quarterback has engaged in multiple conversations with Patrick Mahomes to gain insights into Nagy's coaching methods. Additionally, Dart revealed last week that he received highly positive feedback from Travis Kelce about Nagy's approach.
'I can't wait to get the chance to play for him,' Dart expressed to Forbes during Super Bowl week. 'Just so many great things that are said about him and his coaching style and the work that he puts in, the passion that he has for the game.'
Nagy's Coaching Background and Recent Challenges
Matt Nagy brings a wealth of experience to the Giants, including a head coaching role with the Chicago Bears from 2018 to 2021. During his tenure with the Bears, he led the team to playoff appearances in 2018 and 2020, earning AP Coach of the Year honors in 2018. However, after failing to secure a postseason victory, Nagy was released following the 2021 season.
Nagy returned to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022, initially as a senior assistant and quarterbacks coach before resuming his role as offensive coordinator in 2023. Despite his previous successes, the Chiefs' offensive performance has seen a notable decline under his recent leadership. Prior to Nagy's return, the franchise averaged 8.1 yards per pass attempt, ranking second in the NFL. In contrast, over the past three years with Nagy, the average dropped to 6.8 yards per pass attempt, placing the team in the bottom half of the league.
Support from Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid
Despite these statistical setbacks, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid remains a strong advocate for Nagy. Reid has publicly praised Nagy's capabilities and believes he deserves another opportunity as a head coach in the near future.
'He deserves to have a head coaching job,' Reid stated recently. 'If not, it gives him an opportunity to go out and do his thing. I mean, somebody is missing a gem here. That's how I feel. I would love to see him get picked up and going.'
Future Prospects for Dart and the Giants
Alongside Greg Roman, who previously worked with Harbaugh in Baltimore and played a key role in developing quarterback Lamar Jackson, Nagy will be instrumental in nurturing Jaxson Dart's talent. Harbaugh has acknowledged that Dart's presence was a significant factor in making the Giants an attractive destination for him.
'The quarterback is kind of important. That's kind of a big deal,' Harbaugh admitted. 'I'm excited about Jaxson Dart. I like the way he plays. I like his talent, skill set, all the things he's accomplished, but more than that, I like who he is and what he's about. To me, he's about football.'
As Dart continues to prepare for the 2026 season, his consultations with Mahomes and Kelce underscore his commitment to leveraging every available resource to enhance his performance under Nagy's guidance.
