Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has confirmed that Joelinton has been appointed as the club's vice-captain ahead of the 2026/27 season. The announcement follows the club's statement naming Dan Burn as captain for the forthcoming campaign.
Decision announced internally
"We made the decision yesterday and we announced internally that Dan Burn is the captain representing the team and the club and Joelinton is the vice-captain," Jaissle told Chronicle Live. The Brazil international will serve as Burn's deputy for the new season.
Jaissle had earlier considered Malick Thiaw for the role after the defender captained the side for the second time in three pre-season matches in Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.
Leadership group changes
The Germany international is now expected to be a candidate for the newly formed leadership group. Burn and Jacob Murphy are the only members of last year's six-man squad who remain with the group, following the departures of Kieran Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles and Bruno Guimaraes, while Nick Pope has been told to find a new club this summer.
Jaissle confirmed that the coaching staff will take time to decide on the remaining members of the leadership group. "All the other positions I will take my time as first of all we are not that long here as a coaching staff," he added. "I want to get to know the players much better. There is still the transfer window and at one point there will also be leadership group involved with more names."
When asked whether the decision over the captaincy and vice-captaincy was his, Jaissle responded: "Yes, it was my decision."
