Matthias Jaissle was straight in the faces of Valencia players and staff following Jose Gaya's ruthless late challenge on Anthony Elanga on Saturday evening.
First game in charge marred
Newcastle United travelled to the Mestalla to take on Los Murciélagos in pre-season, with hopes of pumping minutes into the legs of first-team players as the new Premier League campaign fast approaches. It marked Jaissle's first game in charge of the Magpies following his succession of Eddie Howe.
However, the contest under a Spanish sunset was far from plain sailing. Already trailing by a goal due to Filip Ugrinic's long-range wonder strike, matters went from bad to worse for United when Gaya ran through Elanga 10 minutes ahead of the break.
Red card and furious reaction
It was a cynical challenge from the Valencia full-back, who connected with the shin of the Magpies' winger at pace in a dangerous challenge - despite the contest having no competitive value. The Newcastle bench were immediately incensed by the foul, with players quickly confronting Gaya for his actions as substitutes and coaching staff also rushed onto the field of play to protect their team-mate.
Jaissle, meanwhile, was reportedly furious in the faces of Valencia players and coaching staff at the challenge, which resulted in a straight red card for Gaya.
