Jadon Sancho's career has hit a new low, with even a tenth-tier club feeling the need to clarify he wasn't on trial with them. Flixton FC, of the North West Counties league, released a statement on social media: "To clarify, Jadon was not on trial with the club and was not involved in any transfer discussions."
Once a highly sought-after winger, Sancho chose Manchester United over his former club Manchester City in 2021, with Borussia Dortmund banking £72 million. He had scored 16 times in his final year in Germany and was a regular for England.
From Dortmund to Old Trafford
Sancho moved to the Etihad as a teenager but left for Dortmund due to a lack of opportunities. He thrived in Germany, becoming a key player for the Three Lions. His return to the north west was seen as a flex by United fans, but his best football remained in Dortmund.
In his first year at United, Sancho took until late October to register a goal or assist. He scored just three Premier League goals, with the first coming too late for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who signed him but was sacked before seeing his potential.
The Spat with Ten Hag
The turning point came in September 2023 when Sancho was left out of the squad for a match at Arsenal. Erik ten Hag explained, "On his performance on training we didn't select him. You have to reach the level every day at Manchester United."
Sancho publicly called himself a "scapegoat" and never recovered from the fallout. He had three loan spells away in as many years, including a brief return to Dortmund in 2024 where he impressed in the Champions League, but his form has since waned.
No Takers for a Free Agent
Now 26, Sancho is a free agent after his contract expired, and there's a growing list of managers who have passed on him. Aston Villa's Unai Emery used him sporadically and declined a permanent deal. Chelsea paid a penalty fee to avoid signing him. Even Dortmund's coaches had earlier questioned his consistency.
His career, once on an upward trajectory, now sees him without a club, with no one willing to take a chance on a player who once dazzled alongside Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham.
