Jack Wilshere has made a swift return to Arsenal after being appointed as the club's under-18 head coach, just days after retiring from professional football at age 30. The former midfielder held talks with academy manager Per Mertesacker last month, leading to his new role.
Wilshere spent much of last season training at Arsenal and working with academy players, an experience he described as reigniting his passion for coaching. 'I didn't ever reach my full potential as a player — and everyone knows that,' he said. 'I don't think I will ever accept it until I've reached that as a coach.'
The club also announced several other academy appointments. Mehmet Ali becomes under-21 head coach and Professional Development Phase lead, with Max Porter as his assistant. Adam Birchall joins Wilshere's staff as under-18s assistant coach and under-17s head coach.
Wilshere expressed his excitement: 'It's a huge honour to have this role. It's no secret that I love this club. I'm hungry and can't wait to help these young players thrive.'
