Clive Tyldesley 'Upset' at Losing Top ITV Football Commentator Role

Clive Tyldesley has expressed his dismay at being replaced as ITV's lead football commentator after 22 years in the role. The veteran broadcaster, who has voiced the network's biggest matches including Champions League finals and major tournaments, will be succeeded by TalkSport's Sam Matterface from the start of next season.

Tyldesley described himself as 'upset, annoyed and baffled' by the decision, which he said was made by ITV without his consent. 'I was told about three weeks ago so I have had some time to get my head around the decision, but I haven't got my head around it,' he stated. 'I do not know why this decision has been taken.'

Despite being moved aside, Tyldesley will continue to commentate for ITV, particularly at major tournaments. ITV thanked him for his 'superb work' and confirmed that Matterface will remain TalkSport's chief football commentator alongside his new ITV duties.

The decision has drawn criticism from several sports broadcasters. Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling claimed 'ageism is alive and well in UK broadcasting', while BBC's Gary Lineker and The Times' Henry Winter also voiced their support for Tyldesley.
