Erling Haaland: Virgil van Dijk is the best defender I've ever faced

Erling Haaland has described Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk as the toughest defender he has ever faced. The Borussia Dortmund striker, who has faced some of the world's best defenders, singled out the Dutchman for his exceptional physical attributes.

Haaland has faced Van Dijk three times in his career, failing to win any of those encounters. He lost twice while playing for Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League and drew 1-1 with Norway against the Netherlands in a World Cup qualifier, where he scored.

“You know how tall he is, how strong he is and how fast he is, and also the timing is crazy,” Haaland told ESPN. “I don't think I won one duel against him because he's a physical monster.”

The 21-year-old also reiterated comments made before their third meeting: “I do not really fear anyone, I think he is the best defender. He is fast, strong and 'bad' smart.”

Van Dijk returned the compliment, describing Haaland as a special striker with strength and speed. However, the Liverpool centre-back named Lionel Messi as the finest footballer he has faced, citing a tough Champions League night against Barcelona.
