Andoni Iraola Emerges as Leading Candidate for Manchester United Managerial Role
Manchester United have been linked with appointing Andoni Iraola as their next permanent manager following confirmation that he will depart Bournemouth at the season's conclusion. The Spanish coach, who has earned widespread acclaim during his three-year tenure on the south coast, is reportedly admired by figures at Old Trafford.
United's Search for a Permanent Successor Intensifies
The Red Devils continue their hunt for a long-term replacement for Ruben Amorim, who was dismissed in January. Interim manager Michael Carrick has steered the team into contention for a Champions League berth, but he is not the sole candidate under consideration. Iraola's impending availability has placed him firmly on United's radar, though competition for his signature is anticipated, with Athletic Club also reportedly interested in bringing him back to the club where he spent twelve years as a player.
The allure of leading one of football's most iconic institutions could prove irresistible for Iraola. Should he secure the role this summer, the 43-year-old would immediately confront several pivotal decisions at the onset of his reign.
Potential Double Raid on Bournemouth Squad
If appointed, Iraola might be accompanied by two of his current Bournemouth players at Manchester United next season. Striker Eli Junior Kroupi and defender Marcos Senesi have both emerged as transfer targets for the club.
Teenage forward Kroupi has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign, netting ten league goals, including a recent strike against Arsenal. The 19-year-old Frenchman is also attracting interest from Liverpool and Chelsea, but Bournemouth are expected to command a substantial fee given his contract runs until 2030. Kroupi has demonstrated remarkable efficiency in the top flight, averaging a goal every 125 minutes, positioning him as a potential long-term solution up front for United.
Meanwhile, centre-back Senesi, 28, has been a consistent presence for the Cherries this term and is set to become a free agent. Iraola has a track record of developing players who excel after leaving Bournemouth, such as Manchester City's Antoine Semenyo and Real Madrid's Dean Huijsen, offering a blueprint for Kroupi and Senesi to follow.
Addressing the Midfield Void Left by Casemiro
A critical priority for United in the upcoming transfer window will be reinforcing the centre of midfield following Casemiro's announced summer departure. Identifying a suitable partner for the revitalised Kobbie Mainoo is paramount.
Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson has been highlighted as an ideal candidate. Despite reports suggesting the England international prefers a move to Manchester City, Iraola could make a significant statement by persuading the 23-year-old to opt for Old Trafford instead. Anderson, valued at around £65 million, has started all 32 of Forest's league matches this season.
Alternatively, a move for Bournemouth's standout performer Alex Scott could also fill the vacancy. Scott has long been associated with United and is on the fringes of the England national team setup.
Resolving Bruno Fernandes' Future at Old Trafford
Captain Bruno Fernandes remains a cornerstone of Manchester United's squad since his arrival from Sporting CP in 2020. With just over a year remaining on his contract, securing the Portuguese midfielder's future would be a key early task for Iraola if he takes charge.
The 31-year-old has been instrumental this season, contributing to 25 goals in 29 league appearances. Fernandes recently outlined his conditions for staying at the club, stating to The Telegraph: "What I always say to the club is, 'You can't promise me that I'm going to win the Premier League. That's impossible. But if you promise me that we're going to be competitive and we're going to be there at the end... that's all I need to know.'"
He emphasised that such assurances would motivate him to elevate his performance and help the team achieve its ambitions. Resolving this situation will be crucial for United's stability and prospects under any new management.
