From long exposures of motor racing to remote-operated cameras at football matches, the best sports photos of 2025 have been chosen from over 500,000 images submitted in the past year. The selected shots capture fleeting moments, wild celebrations and creative compositions, accompanied by explanations from the photographers themselves.
Chloe Kelly's penalty celebration at Euro 2025 is captured by Florencia Tan Jun as the England star runs towards teammates, a moment described as 'happiness at 100km/h'. Meanwhile, Emilee Chinn's image of steeplechaser Geordie Beamish falling after another runner's foot connects with his face is notable because he got up, placed second in his heat and went on to win gold.
Robbie Stephenson's Ashes photo shows Ben Stokes deflated in front of a Toyota advert, fortuitously capturing the mood of the England camp. Dean Moutharopoulos's wide-angle shot of javelin thrower Guillermo Varona displays his strength and determination in silhouette against a black sky, taken after the photographer lay down against a fence to avoid disturbing him.
Jakub Porzycki used a long exposure at Imola to frame Lando Norris's car through the Ayrton Senna memorial, a creative shot taken between the start and podium ceremony. Lee Smith's image of Sunderland fans in Trafalgar Square before the Championship play-off final captures a peaceful, good-humoured mass celebration at sunset.
