Eddie Howe has left Newcastle United, with his departure following a controversial interview by CEO David Hopkinson in late March. When asked about Howe's future, Hopkinson said: “I don't have a stance on his future. I expect to have a great run to the end of the season and we'll talk about the future when it is time.”
Howe's Frustration with Club Leadership
Hopkinson's words were seen as a lack of support for a manager who took Newcastle from the lower reaches of the Premier League to two Champions League campaigns and a first domestic trophy in 70 years. Howe managed a notoriously difficult club for four and a half years, but instead of a vote of confidence, he received a non-committal response.
Beyond words, Howe was let down by actions. The club accepted Liverpool's £125m for Alexander Isak, and Anthony Gordon was allowed to move to Barcelona. Even Sandro Tonali's potential £100m sale to Tottenham, a team that finished 17th, was a bitter pill. Now, with Bruno Guimaraes likely to be sold, Howe reportedly saw the final straw, as Saudi owners promised much but delivered little after Howe's trophy success.
Natural End or Forced Exit?
Club executives argue they must trade to comply with financial regulations and that players want to leave. But it is their job to ensure marquee players do not want to leave. Howe's tenure may have come to a natural end, with suggestions his departure has been amicable. He is likely to be succeeded by Al-Ahli's 38-year-old German manager, Matthias Jaissle.
It is understood Howe wanted to leave for two weeks, with an exit plan in place since early pre-season. Neither CEO David Hopkinson nor sporting director Ross Wilson were shocked by his departure. Club sources insist it is not about politics, transfers, or recent signings, but an "energy thing". However, Howe's comments after a 4-1 defeat by Bristol City in a pre-season friendly, particularly on Guimaraes – declaring wistfully "what will be, will be" – suggested otherwise.
Some fans point to a turbulent season finishing 12th in the Premier League, despite reaching the Champions League last 16 and Carabao Cup semi-finals. While Jaissle's appointment from the Saudi Pro League is intriguing, many feel Howe could have created a dynasty at Newcastle, and it is a shame it is over.
