Arne Slot has overseen a period of transition at Liverpool since succeeding Jurgen Klopp in 2024, and the Dutch coach's methods have differed from his predecessor in several notable ways. While he clinched a Premier League title in his debut season largely using Klopp's squad, Slot has since made key decisions on and off the pitch, with further adjustments following a summer of high-profile signings.
One change that has pleased captain Virgil van Dijk is the scheduling around Christmas. With only one Premier League match on December 26, Liverpool's home game against Wolves has been moved to Saturday, December 27, giving players Christmas Day off. Van Dijk said: "We have Christmas Day off which is very nice of the staff. It's a nice change. I'll be at home Christmas Eve too and I'm really looking forward to it." He added that it was special to be off on Christmas Day and that he would make the most of being with his family.
Slot has also altered pre-match preparations for home fixtures. Whereas Klopp insisted the squad stay together in a hotel the night before an Anfield match, Slot allows players to rest at home. Van Dijk, who has spoken positively about the change, said: "Personally, I like to sleep in my own bed and be with my family, and so it works out quite well. But what we did in the past worked out quite well, too, as we've been very successful in terms of winning." He noted that the new regime gives him more time at home and reduces time spent in hotels.
Another divergence is Slot's approach to the press. While Klopp could be jovial or passionate with journalists, Slot remains composed and often avoids being drawn into contract speculation. When Mohamed Salah spoke publicly against the club and was omitted from the squad for the Inter Milan fixture, Slot calmly addressed the situation. After Liverpool's victory over Brighton, he said: "As I said last week, actions speak louder than words and we moved on. He was in the squad and he was the first substitution I made."
The Reds have experienced some hiccups this season as Slot familiarises himself with a revamped squad, but they remain unbeaten in their last six matches, suggesting the transition is on track.
