Hincapie 'hits back at Van Dijk' after Liverpool win

Arsenal fans believe Piero Hincapie hit back at a subtle past dig from Virgil van Dijk following Arsenal's win over Liverpool at Anfield.

The Gunners secured their first Premier League victory at Anfield since September 2012, thanks to Kai Havertz's first-half goal that sealed a hard-fought 1-0 win on Merseyside on Sunday.

Landmark Triumph

The landmark win saw Arsenal leapfrog leaders Manchester City to the top of the table, now holding a three-point advantage after nine games, after City suffered a second successive loss to Brighton on Saturday.

The result also dampened early talk of a potential Liverpool title challenge this term. The Reds, who had won five consecutive matches across all competitions under Andoni Iraola, dominated much of the match but failed to test goalkeeper David Raya at all, leaving them in fifth place and nine points off first.

Social Media Response

Hincapie was brought on late by manager Mikel Arteta to replace Christos Tzolis and help see out the gritty win, playing a brief part in an impressive defensive effort.

After the match, he posted a series of pictures from the game on Instagram, finishing with a zoomed-in image of the golden Premier League badge on the shirt sleeves of the defending champions, along with the caption: "I don't forget."

Arsenal supporters took the post as a clear response to Van Dijk, who had posted a similar picture on Instagram after the goalless draw between Arsenal and Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium in January.

"You didn't forget about Van Dijk doing the same fourth slide pic last time," one fan wrote. "That last slide Piero, I love it," wrote another. Another supporter said: "I see what you did here. That last slide." A further comment read: "[I] am sure the message is directly to Virgil. What goes around comes around."
