John Higgins staged a remarkable comeback to beat Judd Trump 6-5 in the Masters semi-final at Alexandra Palace, securing his place in the final at the age of 50. The Scot trailed 5-3 before reeling off three consecutive frames, including a break of 70 in the decider, to deny the world number one his first tournament win of the season.
Higgins, who becomes the oldest triple crown finalist, told BBC Sport: “Even at 5-3, I didn’t give up. Who knows, maybe my name is on the trophy?” He added that he believes he is a better player now than ever before, despite recent losses to Trump.
In the other semi-final, Kyren Wilson also needed a deciding frame to overcome China’s Wu Yize 6-5. Wu led 5-4 after a strong run of breaks, but Wilson fought back with a clearance of 57 to level and then sealed victory with a century break of 116.
Wilson, last year’s runner-up, admitted: “I wasn’t at the races at all today. I don’t know where I got those last two frames from. Sometimes the snooker gods are on your side.”
Higgins will now face Wilson in the final, with both players having demonstrated remarkable resilience to reach the showpiece.
