Viktor Gyokeres has promised Arsenal fans there are “a lot of goals to come” after ending his nine-game goal drought with a brace against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. The Swedish striker’s double fired the Gunners to a 4-0 victory, maintaining their perfect start to the competition.
Gyokeres, who joined Arsenal from Sporting for over £60 million in the summer, had been under pressure to justify his price tag and the honour of wearing the famous No14 shirt previously worn by Thierry Henry. Speaking after the match, he expressed his delight at finally finding the net.
“It feels great, to be honest,” Gyokeres told CBS Sports. “It feels like there is a lot of goals in that shirt and there is a lot of goals to come. It feels amazing. I'm more hungry now. You always want to contribute with work rate and other stuff but when you score goals as well, it's a bit special.”
The 26-year-old admitted he did not have Henry’s number to ask permission to take the shirt but described it as a “big honour”. He also praised his teammates for their support, saying: “The group we have and the spirit is something different and something very special.”
Arsenal have lost just once in their opening 12 games and are one of only three sides with a perfect Champions League record after three matches. They also sit top of the Premier League, and Gyokeres emphasised the team’s hunger for silverware. “We want to win trophies,” he said. “That is our desire and that is, of course, the most important. I want to contribute with goals and improve my game.”
