Former Referee Halsey Backs Man Utd's Martinez Red Card Appeal
Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey has expressed his support for Manchester United's appeal against Lisandro Martinez's red card, deeming the decision overly harsh. The incident occurred during United's 2-1 loss to Leeds at Old Trafford on Monday night, where Martinez was sent off after a VAR review for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin's hair.
Halsey's Verdict on the Controversial Incident
In an interview with The Sun, Halsey provided a detailed analysis of the event. He explained that Martinez and Calvert-Lewin were competing for the ball when the defender briefly touched the attacker's hair. Halsey argued that this did not constitute violent conduct, stating it was a minor contact during a routine challenge.
"In my opinion, it's not violent conduct. It's very, very harsh," Halsey remarked. He questioned whether VAR should have intervened, suggesting the original on-field decision by referee Paul Tierney to play on was correct. Halsey emphasized that defenders often use their arms to gauge positioning, and Martinez's action was not aggressive or intentional.
Manchester United's Appeal and Potential Consequences
Manchester United have formally lodged an appeal against the red card, which carries an automatic three-match suspension for Martinez. The club's decision follows strong criticism from manager Michael Carrick, who labeled the call "one of the worst" he has ever witnessed.
Carrick elaborated to Sky Sports, saying, "It's not a pull, it's not a tug, it's not aggressive, he touches it and gets sent off. Worst of all is he was sent to overturn it as a clear and obvious error. It's shocking." He noted that Martinez was off-balance, and the contact merely dislodged Calvert-Lewin's hair bobble, creating a misleading appearance.
Broader Implications for Premier League Officiating
This incident highlights ongoing debates about VAR's role in Premier League matches. Halsey's comments underscore concerns over consistency and the threshold for "clear and obvious" errors. The outcome of United's appeal could set a precedent for similar cases involving minor physical contact.
As the appeal process unfolds, fans and pundits await the verdict, which will determine Martinez's availability for upcoming fixtures. The decision may influence future refereeing standards and VAR protocols in high-stakes matches.
