Haiti Couleurs Dominates Denman Chase, Gold Cup Hopes Soar
Haiti Couleurs delivered a stunning performance at Newbury on Saturday, jumping over the water to claim a decisive victory in the Denman Chase. The Welsh Grand National winner, trained by Rebecca Curtis, showcased his credentials for the upcoming Cheltenham Gold Cup with a commanding seven-length win over L'Homme Presse. This triumph has significantly shortened his odds to 7-1 for chasing's most prestigious prize, sparking optimism that a British-trained winner could be imminent for the first time since Native River's success eight years ago.
Gold Cup Prospects Strengthened
In the absence of Jango Baie, who was steered around the race due to heavy ground concerns, Haiti Couleurs made all the running to confirm his place in the Gold Cup field on 13 March. With a physique and running style reminiscent of Denman, the 2008 Gold Cup champion, Curtis's chaser demonstrated resilience despite some imperfect jumping. He readily drew clear after the final fence, highlighting his potential for the longer quarter-mile at Cheltenham, which is expected to play to his strengths.
"There were lots of expectations today and he's gone and shown he must have some sort of chance in the Gold Cup," Curtis remarked. "L'Homme Presse is a really good yardstick and although I'm not saying he's gone and beaten a Gold Cup field, he's done really well."
The nine-year-old's positive riding style and unbeaten record in handicaps suggest his ceiling remains unknown, with Curtis noting his affinity for undulating tracks and fast downhill running, as highlighted by jockey Sean Bowen.
Other Key Winners at Newbury
Nicky Henderson's Lulamba also made a significant impact, overcoming a mid-race flat spot to win the Grade Two Game Spirit Chase by six-and-a-half lengths. With only a narrow defeat in last season's Triumph Hurdle blemishing his record, Lulamba is now three-from-three over fences and is expected to start at around 11-8 for the Arkle Trophy at Cheltenham.
"You can see why we did it, it was purely to get that experience," Henderson explained. "That is why we were here and he'd have learnt a lot."
Arkle Trial at Warwick
As a relentless 16-day period of Cheltenham preparations concluded, Sam Thomas's Steel Ally emerged victorious in the Kingmaker Novice Chase at Warwick. This important Arkle trial saw Steel Ally cut to around 10-1 for the two-mile novice chasing championship, adding depth to the competitive field ahead of the festival.
With Haiti Couleurs leading the charge, British hopes are high for a strong showing at Cheltenham, as trainers and jockeys fine-tune their strategies for the upcoming challenges.
